No me toques

Miraida Santiago Matos

Mixed media

This presents a female figure in shades of blue-green, a symbol of all races. She wears a simple outfit, and her body moves with the grace of a dance, as if trying to shake off whatever is troubling her. It is inspired by the Danza “No me toques” by Juan Morel Campos, a favorite of my grandmother Guadalupe. In the background, colorful güiros seem to float in the air, as if recently shaken, spreading their vibration throughout the space. The güiro, the root of our history and a Puerto Rican musical emblem, becomes a living echo of our identity.
